MONTHLY OBITUARY for DECEMBER 1793.

Ο

N his paffage from Bulam, John Strahan Gandell, eldefl fon of the late Mofes Gandell, a respectable citizen of Londen. He was born the 28th of May, 1770, married 1790, and embarked in the Capacity of Secretary to the Society intendng to colonize the island of Bulam (or Bulama), on the western coaft of Africa, in March 1792; where he furvived an amiable wife, who with their child, and the greater part of the fettlers, fell victims to that pelous adventure. Having remained on the Inland till the idea of fuccefs no longer exifted, be failed from thence in the Hankey, Captain Cox, and died on board a few days before the touched at Barbadoes on her way to England; but the manner of his death, of which nothing fatisfactory has tranfpired, is more afflicting to his friends than the feeming fatality which pursued him. Some valuable particulars of the expedition, collected by him, have been anxiously expected, but now the lapfe of time fcarcely leaves any hope of their recovery. This unfortunate young man inherited from nature a ftrong active genius, calculated to have fhone in an elevated fphere of fociety, with a difpoition impatient to enrich it with the treafures of fciente and literature. He has not indeed left any production that would fignalizeis memory, which, confidering the limited pe

riod of his career, and the variety and exa tent of his purfaits, could not be expected; however, many indications of a mind ad vaccing towards perfection, gained him the approbation of diftinguished merit; and whule his genuine fincerity and unaffected manners made a lafting impreffion on those who knew him more intimately, he deferve edly bore, though but for a short time, the endearing appellations of father, hufband, and friend. The perfon from whom we received the above account adds, that Mr. Gandell was formerly one of our Correfpondents.
