The Other is, That I have given an Account of a great many Books men-
tioned by Dempster, without taking Notice of the Places where they were prin
ted, or in what Volume. All I can Jay to this i, That altho' Dempfter
bas not been fo exact in this as could have been wish'd, no more than
Leland or Bale, the English Biographers; yet the late Learned
Antiquiry, Doctor Jamiton, who had Occafion to examine Dempfter's
Fidelity in this Point, more than any Man I ever heard of, having with great
Diligence fearched after our Scots Authors in most of the Famous Libraries
of Italy, Germany and France; yet, I lay, he acknowledged, That, during
this Period of Time, and the Age in which Dempfter himself lived, he was fel-
dom or never to be found in the wrong; and I have done all that lay within the
Compass of my Reading. In one Word; I hope this Collection may be of
fome Ufe to thofe Gentlemen, whofe Occafions and Circumftances cannot allowe
them to be furnished with great Libraries, or Collections of Books; fince
they will find, in what I have already published, an Abstract, or Abridgment,
of An Hundred and Fourty Three Volumes, and Seventy Six Letters,
written upon the most useful Parts of Learning; befides the Hiftory of the
Proceedings and Decifions of Fourty Four Councils, upon the most impor-
tant Points of Theology.
